Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand mountain climber and Antarctic explorer with his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay was the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. He was part of the British Everest expedition and was knighted for this accomplishment. Later he would be the first man to reach the South Pole by tractor on January 4, 1958.
